Steam Summer Sale 2018 is now live – here are our top picks

steam summer sale 2018

The latest Steam Summer Sale has begun its assault on your hearts, minds, and wallets, so be prepared. Steam has launched its customary mid-year sale at roughly the usual time, just a couple of days off from its start date over the past few years. The latest event features the usual load of discounts, and Valve has even gone as far as releasing a new (browser) game to commemorate the event.

As it has been over the past several years, there are no flash sales, so the discounts you see today are pretty much what you should expect until the sale ends on July 5 at 10:00 PDT / 13:00 EDT / 18:00 BST.

Figure out what to buy with our list of the best PC games.

You can navigate all the deals for yourself on the Steam store, but who has time for that? Read on to see some of our top picks for the sale.

You want big games? They don’t come any bigger than Grand Theft Auto V, which is now available at an impressive 67% discount. 2K is offering some strategic savings as well, with 67% off XCOM 2 and 60% off Civilization VI. You can get franchise discounts on series ranging from Sonic to Final Fantasy, and the fabulous Final Fantasy XV Royal Edition is available for a strong 50% off.

A massive Fallout franchise sale makes the Bethesda games 50% off, and offers a 75% discount on the Black Isle classics. If RPGs are your thing, Obsidian’s Tyranny is 66% off, and this year’s Ni no Kuni II can be had for 40% off. And though the discount isn’t as huge as some others, we’d certainly recommend Divinity: Original Sin 2 at 20% off.

If you’re looking to catch up on some games whose sequels were announced at E3, you’ll be happy to know Nioh is 40% off, Dying Light – with all its DLC – is 67% off, and Rage is all the way down to $2.50 US with its 75% discount.

Of course, don’t forget about the indies. Newer releases like Celeste and Into the Breach enjoy 20% off. The excellent roguelike Metroidvania Dead Cells is 40% off (and due to leave Early Access this year.) If you want to go especially grim, you can get Darkest Dungeon for an impressive 70% off.

Steam’s hardware clearouts also continue apace, with a full 95% off the Steam Link – plus some extra cash for shipping and handling. An excellent choice for some in-home streaming, if you’re looking for such a setup.

Valve’s also gotten a new game ready for you called Summer Saliens, where you play a little green blob aiming to defend against all manner of unfriendly alien invaders. It’s as unnecessarily robust as you might’ve hoped complete with unlockable cosmetics, upgrades, and trading cards, and sticking with it enters you in giveaways for particular titles.

Since you’re here hounding discounts, there’s plenty of other good ones to go around. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is having its first ever sale, Quake Champions is free, and Mojang’s Scrolls just became Caller’s Bane with a similar zero dollar price tag. There’s almost too much gaming to go around.
