Sonic’s comics live on with a new publishing deal between Sega and IDW

Sonic Mania Delayed Headcannon PAX West

Yesterday, Sega ended a 24-year partnership with Archie Comics, announcing that they plan to reboot the blue streak’s comic adventures. While we’re not seeing the return of the best Sonic comics (the UK’s incredible Sonic the Comic), it means we’re going back to the starting line.

Sega announced the news of the end of the Archie partnership in a tweet:

Sega haven’t wasted any time getting a new deal in place, however. Today they announced a new partnership with IDW Publishing, a comics specialist with runs on everything from Ghostbusters to Star Wars. They also brought us this:

“We’ve been speaking with beloved Sonic fan-favorite creators and new creators alike, and are excited to be able to spread specifics about our plans for the comic in the near future,” Chris Ryall, IDW’s chief creative officer, says.

“We are ecstatic about this partnership with IDW,” Ivo Gerscovich, chief brand officer for Sonic the Hedgehog, adds. “We know they’ll serve as a good home for the new adventures of Sonic, his friends and foes.”

They’re currently forming creative teams, nailing down writers and artists, and the like. More news will follow once the plans are set.
