As soon as a Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia was announced and its concept revealed, we all guessed that Alfred the Great would be one of the main characters, and his kingdom of Wessex a key faction. But now we’ve got a new in-engine look at another contender: Flann Sinna, of the Gaelic Kingdom of Mide.

We’ve played a couple of hours as Flann already – check out our Thrones of Britannia gameplay preview.

Mide are one of the two Gaelic factions in Thrones of Britannia, a game which imagines the historical ambitions of the kings at the time and invites you to carry them out. In Flann’s case, he wants to see the lands and tribes of Ireland united into a new, greater kingdom. To achieve this, he plots a dangerous alliance with the Vikings, some of whom have settled in England.

Other kings have similar ambitions to unite their people, and these are reflected in the Kingdom Victory condition. This new victory type is not about mere conquest (though you can still win that way if you want), but rather about navigating a story of unique, historically inspired objectives.
